College of Engineering Science and Technology at Shanghai Ocean University is a traditional department with distinctive features developed from the fishery machinery major established in 1958. It was officially founded on January 18, 2006. The college currently has a doctoral degree authorization point in the secondary discipline of Marine Engineering and Information, a master's degree authorization point in the primary discipline of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering, and two professional degree authorization points in Mechanical Engineering and Electronic Information (Control Engineering). Additionally, it offers five undergraduate programs: Mechanical Design, Manufacturing and Automation; Industrial Engineering; Electrical Engineering and Automation; Measurement and Control Technology and Instruments; and Robotics Engineering.
Currently, the college has a total of 1,787 enrolled students, including 1,383 undergraduates and 404 graduate students. Among the graduate students, there are 9doctoral candidates, 4 international undergraduate students, and 4 international graduate students. The faculty and staff total 105, including 71 full-time teachers, 19 laboratory instructors, and 15 administrative personnel. There are 41 individuals with senior titles, 7 doctoral supervisors, and 47 master's supervisors. Additionally, 67 staff members hold doctoral degrees, of which 2 are recognized as national-level talents, and 4 are recognized as provincial and ministerial level talents. The college currently has a laboratory center and an engineering training center, covering an area of over 6,200 square meters.
The major of Mechanical Design, Manufacturing and Automation at the college is recognized as a national-level first-class undergraduate program and has undergone engineering education program accreditation. The Electrical Engineering and Automation program is designated as a provincial-level first-class undergraduate program and is currently conducting a self-evaluation for professional accreditation. The college has received recognition for 2 national-level first-class undergraduate courses, 9 provincial-level first-class undergraduate courses, and 21 university-level courses. Additionally, it has 2 Shanghai quality courses and 12 university-level quality courses; 1 Shanghai ideological and political demonstration course and demonstration teaching team, along with 6 university-level courses; and 30 Shanghai-level key construction courses and 14 university-level courses. Since 2013, the college has been awarded 4 second prizes for teaching achievements at the Shanghai level, 2 special prizes for teaching achievements at the university level, 6 first prizes, and 2 second prizes.
The research focuses on fishery and marine engineering equipment, continuously achieving new breakthroughs. It is home to three provincial and ministerial-level platforms: the Shanghai Ocean Renewable Energy Engineering Technology Research Center, the Shanghai Hadal Science and Engineering Technology Research Center, and the Shanghai Underwater Robotics Engineering Technology Innovation Center. The college has received a donation of an intelligent production line from the Industrial Internet Innovation Center Co., Ltd., and has hosted 17 disciplinary competitions. Over the past three years, it has accumulated research funding of over 37 million yuan and published 220 SCI papers. The college has applied for more than 100 invention patents and has received 14 awards from international, provincial, ministerial, and important associations. In 2022, its engineering discipline ranked in the top 1% globally in the ESI international subject rankings.
The college relies on international exchanges to broaden its global perspective and support the development of young faculty and students. It has established stable international cooperation relationships with Russia, the UK, Norway, and Egypt, while also hosting and organizing international forums and competitions. By publishing foreign language monographs, academic works, and popular science publications, the college strives to gain a voice in the international academic community.
The college hosted the 2023 International Forum for Young Scholars on Smart Fishery Engineering Equipment, organized by the Shanghai Municipal Education Commission, which received wide attention from the industry. It also successfully conducted the 2023 Belt and Road Initiative and BRICS Skill Development and Technological Innovation Competition—Integrated Circuit Design and Application Competition selection event in the Shanghai Lingang New Area. The English monograph Basic Theories and Key Technologies for Deep-sea Spherical Pressure Hulls, received funding from the National Science and Technology Academic Book Publishing Fund.
More than 25 individuals have been invited to serve as associate editors, editorial board members, young editors, invited editors, and deputy chairpersons for international journals such as Ocean Engineering (a top engineering journal), Ships and Offshore Structures, and Frontiers in Mechanical Engineering.
Additionally, the college actively recruits foreign faculty to build a first-class international teaching and research platform and to form a high-level international expert cooperation team. Notable international experts, such as Professor Odd M. Faltinsen (an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, a member of the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters, and a member of the U.S. National Academy of Engineering) and Professor Arvid Naess (an academician of the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters and a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers), have been invited to give academic lectures. The college has hosted the Engineering Innovation Lecture Series multiple times, receiving wide recognition from experts and scholars and actively exploring new models for international exchange.
